Torchwood is a spin-off of the British science fiction show, Doctor Who. Captain Jack Harkness (played by John Barrowman) is a time traveling, immortal, cop/con man who runs the current version of the Welsh branch of the Torchwood Institute, which was founded by Queen Victoria after meeting the Doctor. It's purpose is to protect earth from alien threats and gather intelligence and technology from the aliens.
Series (what we call seasons in the states) 1 and 2 ran as regular series. Series 3 was a 5 part mini-series called Children of Earth which aired in July 2009. COE left Torchwood effectively without a base of operations, or a leader while killing off much of the staff. The show will be back for a fourth season starting in Summer 2011 on the Starz cable channel. John Barrowman, Eve Myles and Russell T. Davies are already signed on. (link to announcement)
