Not everything on the Internet is true. Not everything in a library is true. But within a library, you’ll get the opportunity to escape an invisible filter bubble applied to your searches. Those filters are based on where you were, not where you want to be. Libraries give you the ability to search in absolutely any direction. Libraries offer you filters when you want them to use them. Think of it like a crayon box: the Internet is offering you a box and the library is offering you a box. The Internet’s box is filled with varying shades of green crayons. When you ask why, the Internet replies that your favorite color is green as based on past selections. They’ve graciously thrown in a red crayon and two yellow crayons, and depending which one you might use, you might see a blue crayon at some point. The library’s box is filled with all colors. The problem is you must usually hold up the red crayon and do something, like ask a nearby human, where to find the box with the varying shades of red. And if someone locally has restricted access to red, you can bet your booty there’s signs and subversive language that hint at where you can get a different shade…. cause librarians are rebels that way. So why stay in one color when you can have them all?
