Dragon*Con 2012: Panels

BISis and I cut back some on the panels this year to reduce stress and line standing.

Celebrity Panels:

I think the celebrity panels get bigger and wilder every year at Dragon*Con. BISis and I started the con off with John Barrowman's 10 am Friday panel with Rob Levy and Kai Owen. He was a wild man who mooned everyone after being introduced. Then he spotted a guy dressed in a headdress and speedo part of the way through the panel and got him to come up and be hugged/groped. I didn't get any pictures since we were so far back, but I'll link a video of the panel (uploaded by cos2mwiz). It was too fantastic to miss.

 

 

I drug my sister to see the Friday Josh Gates Destination Truth panel. She doesn't watch the show, but loved the book when I lent it to her. He was as funny and charming as you'd think from watching the show. She actually drug me and AT to the Saturday panel. I think we would have gone to the Sunday one as well if we hadn't had Braves tickets. I don't have any pictures from either panel because the man does not sit still well enough, but I do have video from the Friday panel. It's uploaded in 6 parts. We also managed to snag great seats for the Sunday Eureka panel. BISis got the time wrong and got us there early. We were 23 and 24 in line. This one I do have pictures from. Niall Matter, Tembi Lock, and Kevin Grazier were fairly silent. Colin Ferguson and Jaime Paglia stole the show and went on to prove that hung over panels are the funniest ones out there. I laughed so hard I cried through most of it.

 

Fan Panels:

This was a big year for me. Last year I was only on one panel. This year I was on three. It still feels weird to introduce myself as 'Maggie from badinfluencespeaks.com.'

The first panel was Celluloid Tales: The Year in Film on Friday with Matt Frasier, Ryan Guthrie, Alex Ware, and J.A. Steel (who is a producer).  We covered our thoughts on the movies that have come out so far including Brave, Hunger Games, Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, and Dark Knight Rises, and briefly touched on upcoming movies (I'm really looking forward to Skyfall). J.A. is a producer and had some fascinating insight into the ins and outs of movie making.

Second panel was Eureka: No More Buttons For Fargo on Friday evening with Amanda Marron, Ryan Guthrie, Elizabeth Stacy, and Matt Frasier. I was much more active in this panel as we talked about our favorite moments from the show. I guess the fact that I can quote rather extinsively from it helps.

Third panel was on Saturday afternoon, Superheroes and Beach Blankets, with Henry Hanks,  Bill McIntire, Tom Morris, and Chris Snellgrove. We discussed the 3 superhero blockbusters of the summer, Avengers, Amazing Spider-Man, and Dark Knight Rises. Actually, Dragon*Con is the sole reason I saw DKR. I'm not much of a Batman fan, but I enjoyed the film. I'd love to see someone continue on where they left off. A audience member brought up the point that maybe [Robin was a code name so he'd know Bruce was all right and not actually his real name.]

I actually have a picture from this panel thanks to AT. My sister proved useless again this year at taking a picture of me on each panel. From left to right: Henry Hanks, Tom Morris (as Shrek), Bill McIntire (dragon hat), me, and Chris Snellgrove. (By the way, that Haven sign was a problem in every panel I sat on. It kept falling. I hope that isn't a bad omen for the show.)

Saturday Night Drive-In

I don't know who is chosing the creature features for this MST3000 style panel (I suspect Joe Crowe, the new head of the Sci-Fi Classics track). This year's movie, Mega-Python vs. Gateroid, might have topped Sharktopus from last year. Essentially it was Team Debbie Gibson vs. Team Tiffany. I'm Team Tiffany, by the way. It was truely and hysterically horrendous. I laughed myself silly. The production company also helped out by providing several DVDs to be raffled off. BISis won a copy of Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies. I can't wait to see it.

BIS Top 5 Characters in a Science Fiction Series

This starts with the usual caveats. This list is my opinion. It's hard to choose only 5. I'm not a Trekkie. Sorry. I am a fan of science fiction whether tv, movie, music or book. If fascinates me that a genre loved by geeks and tech freaks focuses so much on the perils of technology. I'm also getting slightly off topic. This list is supposed to be about tv characters.

I watch a fair bit of science fiction television though as you can tell from the list BBC and Syfy dominate my viewing habits. These are the 5 (well, 6) characters that have caught my fancy the strongest. Not all are dashing but they're all smart and snarky. Gods, I love some good snark.

 

5. Tie - Captain Jack Harkness, Torchwood & Doctor Who (BBC)

Ah. The dashing captain. He's suave. He's charming. He's adventurous. He also does anything that moves. What did the Doctor call him? Omnisexual? Jack (John Barrowman) isn't the most consistent of men, but that smile can ease a lot of difficulties, and knowing Jack other things as well.

 

            10th Doctor, Doctor Who (BBC)

Now that we had the dashing captain, we have his compatriot, the good Doctor. They say you never forget your first Doctor and they're right. I first got hooked on Doctor Who when I saw "42" air on BBC Wales on a vacation my sister and I took in 2007. I've gone back to watch Eccleston (#9) and now watch Smith (#11), but David Tennant will always be the Doctor for me.

Smart and funny with a dry sense of humor tends to rock my boat. He looked at every adventure and dangerous situation as a new and exciting experience. This doesn't mean he didn't slide into his own bouts of melancholy but he could still find a laugh.

 

 

4. Mal Renyolds, Firefly (Fox)

Captain Tight Pants himself. The snarky, cranky, swashbuckler who flys through life by the seat of his pants. Got to love me some Mal Renyolds. Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion knew what they were doing when they created and shaped (respectively) their space cowboy. Even if his plan falls through, which it usually does, Mal can come up with something so his crew survives and maybe even get paid. He puts true to the adage that a flawed hero is a more interesting hero. Mal tries hard but he's not the most honest, even tempered, or understanding of men. Hell, he isn't even the smartest but he does have the smartest mouth.

3. Douglas Fargo, Eureka (Syfy)

Fargo. What button did you press  now?

I understand this. My last words will probably be, "I wonder what this does." Buttons, particularly unlabeled buttons, are almost irresistible. Fargo (played by Neil Grayston) is the geek I think a lot of us are. He's smart, kind of adorable, always willing to help, and completely under-appreciated. Until this last season, he did much of the work (and, yes, caused a number of the crises), but tended to be run down by everyone.  It kept giving me the urge to reach through the screen and hug him. I've been there and gotten the t-shirt. Now, he's in charge of GD, and faking it until he makes it.

Looking through my screen captures for all 4 seasons, I noticed that all the ones of Fargo show him either in great peril or being a goof. I think I may need to remedy that once the show starts again this summer.

 

 

2. Connor Temple, Primeval (BBC)

I'm a geek (obviously) so I tend to be drawn to geek characters in movies and on TV. Connor (played by Andrew-Lee Potts) is a brilliant, generous and somewhat bumbling geek who stumbled on rifts that cause dinosaurs (and many other creatures) to travel to modern day Britain. After that, he manages to use his knowledge and creativity to take a place on the team that investigates and secures the anomalies.

He's got a quirky style and an engaging grin. It's hard to resist that boyish enthusiastic that invites you to laugh along with him.

 

 

1. Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace, Battlestar Galactica (Syfy)

I'm probably going to get some grief for this one. BISis has already gotten on my case for not choosing Apollo.

Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) is someone I identify with more easily. She's also pretty damned entertaining with all that sass. She fraks things up but keeps trying and doing her best anyway. Not that she ever really learns to keep her mouth shut. Her fears may rule in her personal life but out in that Viper she is a fierce force to be reckoned with.  She'll take whatever measures are necessary to get the job done. She never gives up no matter the odds.

And yes, I've seen the original series, and still prefer Katee Sackhoff's Starbuck. I'll admit to the fact that the first I saw of the modern version was Razor and I hated Starbuck after seeing it but she really grew on me while watching the rest of the series.

Torchwood: Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

Season 2, Episode 1

Jack returns to modern day Torchwood after his time with the Doctor (Doctor Who episodes Utopia, The Sound of Drums, and The Last of the Time Lords). He finds his team has survived without him but a blast from his past arrives in the form of Captain John Hart, a former partner and lover. Will his new team be able to survive the old?

Gwen: Excuse me, have you seen a blowfish driving a sports car?

Thug: Come any closer and I'll open up his neck.
John: Fine. Which artery do you normally sever?
Thug: I'm not bluffing.
John: Oh, well now, you've given yourself away. Only someone who's bluffing says they're not.

Torchwood will be back for season 4

Torchwood will be coming back for a 4th season that will air on the cable channel Starz.  John Barrowman and Eve Myles will both be rejoining the cast as Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper respectively.   Russell T Davies is also on board.  Unfortunately for us, it won't air until Summer 2011.

Torchwood: Captain Jack Harkness

Season 1, Episode 12

Jack and Tosh are transported to 1941 while investigating ghost sightings at the abandoned Ritz dance hall. While there, Jack meets his alter ego.

Note: RCJH stands for the Real Captain Jack Harkness.

RCJH: Captain Jack Harkness, 133th squadron.

Jack: ...his screams.  I went to war when I was a boy.  I was with my best friend.  We got caught crossing the border over enemy lines.  They tortured him, not me, because he was weaker.  They made me watch him die and they let me go.
RCJH: Who were they?
Jack: The worse possible creatures you can imagine...I persuaded him to join up.  I said it would be an adventure.  He hadn't lived.
RCJH: Have any of us?

RCJH: Why did you make me kiss her goodbye?
Jack: I just think you should live every night like it's your last.  Make tonight the best night of our life.  You're alive right here, right now.  Your men are fine.
RCJH: What are you trying to say?
Jack: Go to her.  Go to your woman and lose yourself in her.
RCJH: Maybe I should.
Jack: Yeah.
RCJH: Is Toshiko your woman?
Jack: No, there's no one.  Go to her.

Jack: Tomorrow is their last training exercise.  Just another day.  They go out on a sortie and are surprised by two formations of Messerschmidts.  He destroys three of the enemy.  His men listen to his whoops of joy over the radio.  Then it all goes quiet.  He can't bail out because his whole plane is on fire but his men all make it back to safety.

Tosh: Who were you?
Jack: A con man.  That's why I took his name and falsified his records so it seemed he was still alive.
Tosh: How did you end up in Torchwood?
Jack: Someone saved my life.  Brought me back from death and ever since then it's been like they're keeping me for something and I don't know what it is.  I'm sorry for dragging you into this.
Tosh: It was my choice.

Torchwood Series 3 Commentary

COE: Day One

The creep factor in this episode (heck the whole series) is high. Those are the creepiest children I've ever seen. The episode gives really good insight into the personal lives of Torchwood though. Gwen and Rhys trying to create a home for themselves. Ianto desperately wanting Jack to acknowledge their relationship as more than sex, "He thought we were together. Like a couple. You two. The way he said you two." Jack never quite getting to that point. Ianto finally admitted to his family that he's seeing Jack. He really loves him. Jack revealing that he has a daughter and grandson. Wow. In some ways, it makes complete sense, Rose (powered by the heart of the Tardis) only made him impossible to kill. She never took away his reproductive powers. Do you wonder how many kids he might have scattered around the universe? The man has a lot of sex. He has to have more. Gwen and her pregnancy was a shocker. How's she going to coordinate that with her job? It's not like she works normal hours. Poor Rhys, that Jack knows first. Ha!

Mr. Dekker is creepy and practical but just a little removed from everything. Frobisher and the PM were frustrating in their desire to cover their own asses more than save people. Johnson was interesting, and pushy and ruthless. I had hopes for Rupesh. He seemed nice and they needed a new doctor. Shame that he ended up being on the wrong side and expendable.

This miniseries gives you a little taste each night without solving anything until the very end. I very much hope there is a series 4 of Torchwood.

COE: Day Two

Isn't it creepy to watch the body bag writhe as Jack reforms? It's a damned nice touch though but did you notice that he doesn't have genitals at all when he's at the charred stage?

I can fully believe Lois's comment after she plans out how to get Jack. "I'm a PA. It's what I do." If personal assistants ever rise up, they will be able to take over the world, or crush it. They're the ones who run everything. They're the ones who plan out and keep everything tidy.

Oy. Watching Gwen shoot makes me flinch every time. What's with the jerking the gun up? Eve Myles trying to make it look like there is a lot of recoil or something. Looks horrible and terribly showy. Then Ianto, with better info, swoops in and saves the day with his forklift.

John Barrowman. Getting some love handles but very nice ass.

Day Three tomorrow.

COE: Day Three

Don't you wonder how they were expected to "go about their normal day" when schools were closed? Scrambling to find child care for a school aged child on a school day isn't part of a normal day neither is freaking out about what could happen with the kids next. PM Green was a lovely image of a politician, was he not? You just have to love how he pawns off all responsibility on to Frobisher, "I will withdraw." Responsibility and ethics really aren't words you can associate with elected officials anymore.

The alien reminds me of a toddler. It demands what it wants and when it isn't getting it's way or is questioned it pitches a hissy, all spitting and flailing.

Well, days one through three were the set up. With day four, everything will come to a head. Can't wait for it, can you?

COE: Day Four

Ianto said, "the Jack I know," but I think Jack kept so much from him. I remember Jack admitting to being a coward (I think it was in the first series of the new Doctor Who with Christopher Eccleston). Emotionally, he proved to be in this episode, hell, in the entire third series. You could see how strongly he cared for Ianto but could never say, "I love you." All Ianto wanted him to do was recognize them as a couple and not just fuck buddies. That part broke my heart as much as Ianto's death did. I really did have tears pouring down my face as he died. He was my favorite. I'm not sure I'll want to watch it without Ianto. Damn British shows and their high character turn over rates.

Now to the politicians, didn't they just get more lovely and endearing? All that kindness and desire to protect their people. Let's see what were some of the lines? Oh yes, "camouflage-able contribution," calling children "units," figuring out how to "sell it," "vital and practical," "demonstrably fair" which was the only good one, "one loss per family, every second child," "the children and grandchildren of everyone around this table will be safe," and "plan for the future." The plan they figured out was so charming. I thought I had wondered into a Jonathan Swift novel though he at least would have been sarcastic. The bottom 10% of performing schools would go. In other words, the schools they couldn't (or wouldn't is more likely) fix. They would get rid of all the kids they though would never amount to anything. Even Frobisher, who had made some rather ethically bankrupt ass saving decisions up to this point, looked shocked. What kind of world are you saving when you're willing to make decisions like this?

COE: Day Five

I'm really not sure what to say. That went completely askew from what the series has done before though it does make good political commentary about how things are moving in the world today. From how this ended, if there ever is a season 4, it will have a whole new cast of characters. Who knows? Maybe they'll bring back James Marsters as Captain John Hart to lead a new team.

Torchwood

Torchwood is a spin-off of the British science fiction show, Doctor Who. Captain Jack Harkness (played by John Barrowman) is a time traveling, immortal, cop/con man who runs the current version of the Welsh branch of the Torchwood Institute, which was founded by Queen Victoria after meeting the Doctor. It's purpose is to protect earth from alien threats and gather intelligence and technology from the aliens.
Series (what we call seasons in the states) 1 and 2 ran as regular series. Series 3 was a 5 part mini-series called Children of Earth which aired in July 2009. COE left Torchwood effectively without a base of operations, or a leader while killing off much of the staff. The show will be back for a fourth season starting in Summer 2011 on the Starz cable channel.  John Barrowman, Eve Myles and Russell T. Davies are already signed on. (link to announcement)

Brigid Spears: I'm not saying he was perfect. You know that better than me, but he worked hard. He always worked hard. I don't think that's valued enough these days, hard work, and he was a good man. I want you to know that. John Frobisher was a good man, because when the history of this is written, they'll talk about the ministers and the soldiers and the things with numbers for names and I think people will forget how very good he was. I want you to remember him like that. If you ever think of John Frobisher, just remember that it wasn't his fault.

Johnson: He'll be fine. The nice kids are safe. If you're going to get rid of 10% then take the 10% you don't want. All those kids on street corners, they finally got rid of them.

Alice Carter: Even if 90% look the other way then what sort of world are you leaving behind?

Gwen: There's one thing I always meant to ask Jack back in the old days. I wanted to know about that Doctor of his. All these times in history when there's no sign of him, I wanted to know why not, but I don't need to ask anymore. I know the answer now. Sometimes the doctor must look at this planet and turn away in shame. I'm recording this in case anyone...in case anyone ever finds it so you can see...so you can see how the world ended.

Denise Riley: The public will be wanting a statement, sir.
